We know you’re busy. But there are a variety of opportunities for you to get involved in the SWANA Young Professionals (YP) group that don’t require a huge time commitment. From simply networking with other YPs to meeting established solid waste professionals to volunteering your time and talents to the YP group, we offer it all.

    Landfill Management

    Chair & Vice Chair for the Program Committee — YPs are encouraged
    Mission Statement: The Program Committee develops and oversees the division's technical programs at WASTECON and the landfill programming at the Spring Conference. The Program Committee proposes future locations, technical presentations, tour locations and other items associated with the annual Spring conference.

    Objectives:

    • Develop topics for the Spring conference, review abstracts to select speakers and coordinate curated session
    • Plan the Spring facility tour in cooperation with the program committee and the local chapter
    • Support event sessions by serving as moderators conferences
    • Encourage committee members and conference presenters to contribute articles for I Am SWANA News, especially getting conference presenters to describe their programs, to extend their opportunities for recognition
    • Convene a review upon completion of annual conferences to review attendee comments, assess attendance success and determine whether changes in presentation (e.g., more in-depth vs. case study) selection of topics should be considered to improve value to membership
    • Undertake a comprehensive review of program selection of topics and objectives strategy to ascertain what is required for greater Division Membership attendance and/or participation.
    • Learn more about our members by working with staff in data mining past applications and potentially completing a survey of current members.

  • Open Steering Committee Positions

    Call for OPEN YP Steering Committee Positions — YP Conference Planning

    SWANA is now accepting applications for an open Young Professionals Steering Committee position. The positions would begin immediately following this election process. All Steering Committee members must be a SWANA member in good standing and able to serve a minimum of a two-year term.

    Additionally, all Steering Committee Members must be 35 years of age or younger at the start of his or her term.

    RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE

    • Participate as an active member of the YP Steering Committee. This includes monthly conference calls and an average of two–four hours of work per month
    • Represent the interests of all SWANA YP members
    • Promote YP member involvement in SWANA
    • Provide YP members with leadership, guidance, knowledge, connections and resources
    • Participate in the Mentor Match Program
    • Annually attend WASTECON and other SWANA Conferences/Symposia as possible
    • Participate as a member of one of the sub-committees (Student Engagement, Student Design Competition, YP Conference Planning, Professional Development, and YP Representation)

    SWANA Young Professional members interested in being considered for a Steering Committee position should submit an application packet to SWANA Membership at membership@swana.org.

    YOUR APPLICATION PACKET MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

    3. Summary of qualifications clearly demonstrating the following:
    • Active participation, involvement, and leadership in SWANA and SWANA YP activities at the local and/or international level
    • Professional experience and achievement within the solid waste industry
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills (leadership, consensus-building)
    • Communication skills (public speaking, presentations, meeting facilitation)
    • Expressed vision for advancing SWANA YP initiatives and his or her goals for YP initiatives during the term of the Steering Committee position
    1. At least two letters of support or other documentation supporting candidate’s contribution to SWANA and the solid waste field (where applicable), options may include:
    • Letter(s) of support** from the candidate’s local SWANA Chapter (where applicable)
    • Letter(s) of support** from the candidate’s employer (where applicable)
    • Other letter(s) of support from persons familiar with candidate's related professional experience and personal leadership capabilities.

    ** The letter of interest and/or the letters of support must include language that acknowledges the candidate’s financial obligation to attend WASTECON® and other SWANA events as invited and necessary to represent the association, and to devote the time required to fulfill the duties of the position for a minimum two-year period.

    The nominating committee shall review applications for the Steering Committee positions and select the most qualified candidates.
