Challenge 2008

Take the Challenge!

As part of SWANA’s new program to promote the “Energy, Climate, and Waste Connection,” we are providing this portal for news information and resources that will promote the role that solid waste management can play in creation of new and alternative renewable energy sources and in the reduction of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

In her first speech as SWANA’s 2008 President, Laurie Batchelder Adams formally introduced ths program to SWANA members during the SWANA Annual Business Meeting at WASTECON in Reno, NV, on October 17, 2008. She outlined the many efforts that SWANA plans to undertake in the coming year. Her address included a challenge: Each solid waste professional must do his or her part to conserve energy, to move forward renewable energy portfolios that include solid waste, and to control climate-harming emissions in their operations.

Below you can see the pledges that have been made by others.  Take a moment and share your commitment to this important cause by
pledging your support.

County of GreenvilleMarciaPapinSC - SOUTH CAROLINAIn my personal life I pledge to drink wonderful Greenville tap water, out of my "Refill not Landfill" nalgene bottle to reduce plastic bottle usage. Continue to change lightbulbs to CFL's. Walk to Barleys Tap Room and roll home. Stop letting the water run when I brush my teeth and rinse the dishes.
Salt River LandfillRichardAllenAZ - ARIZONAThe Salt River Landfill that is owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has several projects in the works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A landfill gas pipeline is in the last stages of construction that will take landfill gas from our facility and pipe it to an exisiting landfill gas to energy plant about 3.5 miles away. In addition, the landfill is in the permitting stage of building a bioreactor at the landfill to increase the gas production rate. This increased amount of gas will then be shipped off site in the pipeline and/or used to generate power on-site (once the existing plant reaches capacity). In addition, located at the landfill is a Material Recovery Facility that also helps to reduce green house gas emissions.
City of DunedinDonRossFL - FLORIDAAt home I have replaced incandescent lamps with CFL's, raised the A/C thermostat, reduced the number of hours the pool pump runs, and committed to drinking tap water and refilling plastic bottles rather than landfilling. At work, I promoted and conducted the hiring of the city's first sustainability coordinator, with a 2008 goal of silver certification for city operations with the Florida Green Building Coalition. I pledge to promote SWANA's Energy, Climate, and Waste Connection through these efforts and more, and am actively involved in the planning for Wastecon-2008 TAMPA.
