Welcome!
From household hazardous waste (HHW), to electronics waste (E-Waste), scrap tires, treated wood, propane tanks, and paint disposal, "special" wastes make up a significant portion of any community’s waste stream. SWANA’s Special Waste Division focuses on educating its subscribers, as well as the public, on the ever-changing array of issues concerning special waste management & handling.
What We Do:
In an effort to address the most pressing issues facing special waste professionals, the Division offers a variety of unique activities, products, and forums where subscribers can expect focused technical content, opportunities to network, and resources for professional growth. In addition, Division participation through leadership and committee positions are always welcomed and strongly encouraged.
Thinking Outside the Blue Box - Recycling & Special Waste Conference
The goal of this conference is to drive innovation in recycling and special waste management programs that go above and beyond the traditional blue box programs that collect newspaper and containers from homes and residences. The goal is to highlight efforts and approaches that will be needed to take recycling and diversion to higher and higher levels.
This conference will feature presentations on a variety of topics including:
- Organics Recovery and Composting
- Glass Recycling and Glass Markets
- Materials Reuse and Partnerships for Reuse
- Extended Producer Responsibility
- Electronics Recycling
- RFID and GIS used as collection tools
- White Goods, Paint, Expanded Polystyrene, Bio-fuels
- And many more…
The 2009 Conference will be held February 9-13, 2009 in Portland, OR.
Special Waste Training:
The Division was instrumental in the development of several training courses addressing special waste topics. Courses have included: Waste Screening at MSWM Facilities, Electronics Recycling, FEMA Debris Management, HHW & CESQG Facility Operations 24-Hour Training, and Construction & Demolition Debris Certification Course.
The Division was also involved in the development of the home-study training package, Construction Waste & Demolition Debris Materials.
Lamp Recycling Outreach Program (LROP):
Under a U.S. EPA, the Lamp Recycling Outreach Project (LROP) was established to increase the recycling of mercury-containing lamps so that the mercury is recovered and recycled - thus avoiding disposal of the lamps as HHW in the municipal waste stream. As part of this project, a workshop entitled Promoting Mercury Containing Lamp Recycling Programs: A Guide for Solid Waste Managers was created to provide guidance to solid waste managers in accomplishing this goal in their communities.

Quarterly Newsletter:
The Division’s quarterly E-newsletter provides Special Waste Division subscribers with up-to-date industry-related news and unique case studies that may be of interest to subscribers.
Awards:
The Special Waste Division currently evaluates and presents SWANA’s Special Waste Excellence Award at WASTECON every year.
