Welcome!
With over 600 members, SWANA’s Landfill Management Division remains one of our largest and most active technical Divisions. Whether it’s through industry-specific MOLO training or research and development initiatives on bioreactor technology, the Division’s wide-reaching technical focus helps provide practical solutions to the multitude of issues and challenges concerning the planning, design, construction, closure, and post-closure care of today’s landfills.

What We Do:
The Landfill Division is currently comprised of 7 standing committees concentrating on both conventional and emerging landfill subject matters. These committees work together to develop and coordinate a variety of industry-leading events and activities, including the following:

13th Annual Landfill Symposium
June 9-12, 2008, Palm Springs, CA
The Landfill Symposium attracts a mix of public & private landfill owner/operators, design engineers, and State/Federal regulators. The multi-track, broad-based technical program and trade show covers a wide variety of topics and includes a special peer review session highlighting landfill case studies and research projects.  This year’s symposium offers informative technical sessions comprised of over 20 unique presentations on today’s hottest landfill topics. Peer-Reviewed Research:
Selected authors worked with peer review committees on their draft documents to improve their final papers. The selected authors will present their research during sessions at the 2008 Landfill Symposium. Also, the selected papers will be published in MSW Management Magazine. This peer-review format provides the opportunity to validate and highlight work concerning either successful operational case studies or new research on any aspect of landfill practice.

Past technical session topics have included:

  • Landfill reclamation, redevelopment, and final use
  • Leachate management
  • Landfill economics and post-closure financial assurance
  • Regulations & permitting
  • Conversion Technology Case Studies
  • Geosynthetics and geotechnical issues (liners, groundwater issues, etc.)
  • Emission Offsets & Carbon Credits

Landfill Training:
The Landfill Management Division has been instrumental in the development of several SIGNATURE training courses covering the landfill management industry. Courses have included: Manger of Landfill Operations (MOLO) Certification Course, Manager of Bioreactor Landfill Operations Certification Course , and Landfill Operational Issues.

Legislative, Advocacy, and Rulemaking:
The Division regularly monitors, reviews, and comments on current legislative and regulatory actions that could potentially affect landfill operations and new technology. Recent initiatives include:

  • The tracking of Federal landfill financial assurance discussions and possible refinements
  • The tracking of homeland security issues impacting the landfill industry, including the disposal of diseased animal carcasses and bio-hazard contaminated materials

Quarterly Newsletter:
The Division’s quarterly E-newsletter provides Landfill Division subscribers with up-to-date industry-related news and unique case studies, and reports on Association news that impacts the group.

Awards:
The Landfill Division currently evaluates and presents SWANA’s Landfill Management Excellence Award at WASTECON every year. The Division is also responsible for presenting the annual "Landfill Distinguished Achievement Award," awarded at the Landfill Symposium each June.
