Welcome!
Long recognized as the largest single budget item in solid waste management, the collection and transfer of refuse and recyclables relies heavily on efficiency and reliability. Focusing on issues such as route design, innovative technologies, health and safety, and contracting and franchising, SWANA’s Collection & Transfer Division provides subscribers with first-rate information in this dynamic field.

What We Do:
We are committed to providing subscribers with a wide variety of resources to address the concerns of collection and transfer professionals. Subscribers enjoy tailored technical content at industry symposia, networking events, access to cutting edge industry reports, recognition within their field, opportunities to be involved in division leadership, and much more. Here is a summary of just a few of the Division’s many activities:

Collection and Transfer Activities:
The Collection and Transfer Division shares information about current topics through a number of SWANA resources. The Division takes an active role in promoting the Solid Waste Equipment Show and developing the Collection and Transfer Technical Track each year at WASTECON. In addition, through E-Sessions, the Division presents new innovations and analyzes issues that affect the collection and transfer industry. Important topics impacting this division are:

  • Vehicle fleet management and maintenance
  • Collection Efficiency and Case Studies
  • Enhancing Vehicle Performance through the use of Alternative Fuels
  • Current Emission Regulations
  • Enhancing vehicle performance with the use of alternative fuels
  • The social, environmental, economical, and political challenges influencing waste collection strategies

Collection and Transfer Training:
Today, the collection and transfer of refuse and recyclables relies heavily on efficiency and predictability. Explore how implementing an efficient route design will help your bottom line. Learn to handle "waste with haste," while discovering how to keep transfer operations lean and mean. Courses have included: Municipal Solid Waste and Recyclables Collection Efficiency Workshop, Managing Municipal Solid Waste Collection Systems Certification Course, Managing Transfer Station Systems Certification Course, and Training For Collection Operations Personnel.

Legislative, Advocacy, and Rulemaking:
Current legislative activities that may have an impact on the collection and transfer operations of our subscribers are regularly monitored, reviewed and commented on by the Division. Special attention is paid to initiatives such as diesel engine retrofits, interstate transport of waste, and driver CDL requirements.

Quarterly Newsletter:
An electronic quarterly E-Newsletter is sent to all Division subscribers to communicate Division updates, highlight industry trends, update members on current legislative and policy activities, spotlight special interest pieces, and provide updates on SWANA activities.

Awards:
The Collection & Transfer Division solicits and evaluates award nominations for their two SWANA Excellence Awards titled Collection Systems and Transfer Station Systems. The awards are both presented at WASTECON every year.
