SWANA ANNOUNCES 2007 EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS

Silver Spring, MD (June 28, 2007)—SWANA is pleased to announce this year’s winners of the 2007 Excellence Awards. The Awards program for demonstrated excellence in the field of Solid Waste Management was created to recognize outstanding facilities, operations and programs committed to the “environmentally and economically sound management of solid waste,” while at the same time, encouraging innovation. Each of SWANA’s eight technical divisions has at least one award category through which they identify top-notch facilities, operations and programs. Award winners will be honored at WASTECON 2007 in Reno Nevada, Thursday, October 18 and also recognized throughout the year in SWANA newsletters, as well as in online and onsite events.

JOHN BOSS SPEAKS AT SWANA CONFERENCE

Silver Spring, MD (June 25, 2007)—John F. Boss, PE, past director of  the Solid Waste Association of North America’s (SWANA) Landfill Management Division and California Gold Rush Chapter President, presented the keynote address at SWANA’s Landfill Symposium and Planning and Management Conference in San Diego, CA earlier today.  Boss spoke about the latest landfill technology and trends and what they mean for the future of the solid waste industry.  Boss’s address highlighted current California initiatives and issues as a reference point for the future.

SWANA SUBMITS COMMENTS TO CHAIRMAN DINGELL

Silver Spring, MD (June 19, 2007) – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) submitted comments to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John D. Dingell (D-MI) and to Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee Chairman Rick Boucher (D-VA) regarding SWANA’s position on a federal renewable portfolio standard(RPS).  In the comments, SWANA recommends four characteristics that it believes any RPS must include.

SWANA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SPEAKS AT HAULER SAFETY EVENT

Silver Spring, MD (June 13, 2007)—The Executive Director and CEO of The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), John H. Skinner, Ph.D., spoke earlier today at a hauler safety event at Covanta’s Fairfax, Virginia facility. Skinner was one of eight (8) speakers at today’s event, held in recognition of National Hauler Safety Month, and hosted by Covanta in cooperation with The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Alliance Program and the Integrated Waste Services Association (ISWA).

SWANA SUPPORTS RISE ACT WITH NECESSARY AMENDMENTS

Silver Spring, MD (June 5, 2007)—SWANA has proposed three amendments to the RISE Act of 2007, introduced this week by Senators Snowe (R-ME) and Carper (D-DE). In a letter to the Senators, SWANA requested: a revision of the definition of recycling to include composting, the option of a tax credit as an alternative to accelerated depreciation, and a mechanism for the public sector to directly benefit from the financial incentives.

SWANA TO UPDATE THREE TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION COURSES

As directed by its International Board, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has begun work updating three of its current training courses: Construction & Demolition Debris, Managing MSW Recycling Systems and Managing Transfer Systems. SWANA has taken steps to develop a Body of Knowledge (BOK) for each of the three courses, each will contain the compendium of the skills, knowledge, and abilities that a manager of a given program should possess in order to successfully run that program.
