Division Volunteer Opportunities

Welcome!
The Communication, Education and Marketing (CEM) Division was developed to enhance the way solid waste organizations interact with their surrounding communities. By facilitating the flow of successful community-based programs and ideas, the Division’s activities will help you identify campaigns and strategies that will work best for you, your organization, and your service community.

What We Do:
The Division is currently made up of four committees: Programming, Communications, Training, and Awards. These committees work together to provide CEM-related content for various SWANA activities and events throughout the year.

One of SWANA’s core goals is to provide its technical division members with the opportunity to share ideas with other industry professionals across North America and to identify topics that guide your work today and that will influence your work in the future. There are a number of ways in which a CEM Technical Division member can get more involved – there’s something for everyone!

  • Participate in our program committee for WASTECON by helping to plan the technical content and presentations for this event
  • Communicate with other Division members through the CEM list serve to get answers to your questions and feedback on your ideas
  • Highlight your program in a SWANA e-Session.  Contact Jessica Haislip to work on developing an online presentation related to an article you wrote, an idea you have, or the program you manage.
  • Submit an article about your project for the quarterly Division newsletter.

 Committee Tasks

CEM Training and Workshops:
The Division’s Training Committee works to identify and develop workshops and training courses that focus on communication, education and marketing concepts impacting the solid waste community. The Committee is currently looking into the possibility of various online training options and expanding the successful Public Education Workshop for Solid Waste Professionals held at previous events.

Quarterly Newsletter:
The Division’s quarterly newsletter provides CEM subscribers with up-to-date industry-related news and unique case studies that may be of interest. It also provides a glimpse into how the CEM Division will be involved in upcoming SWANA events.

Awards:
The CEM Division currently evaluates and presents three SWANA Excellence Awards at WASTECON every year in the following categories: Communication, Public Education, and Marketing. In the past two years, over 40 organizations have submitted applications for these popular awards.

Ongoing Projects:
In addition to annual and quarterly programming, the CEM Division is involved in other projects and partnerships with SWANA and its technical divisions.  Please do not hesitate to contact SWANA if you want to get involved in one of these projects or have any other ideas for how the CEM division can reach out to the solid waste community.

Ongoing projects include:

Waste-to-Energy Public Outreach: This project is directed toward overcoming public misconceptions about waste-to-energy technology and soliciting comments from solid waste agencies throughout North America on why their communities choose to use or not use waste-to-energy.  Comments will be reviewed and, with your permission, may be published in our quarterly newsletters.

Stay tuned for more!
