Welcome!
The newest of SWANA’s Eight Technical Divisions, the Communication, Education & Marketing (CEM) Division was developed to enhance the way solid waste organizations interact with their surrounding communities. By facilitating the flow of successful community-based programs and ideas, the Division’s activities will help you identify campaigns and strategies that will work best for you, your organization, and your service community.

What We Do:
The Division is currently made up of four committees: Programming, Communications, Training, and Awards.  These committees work together to provide CEM-related content for various SWANA activities and events throughout the year, including the following:

Communications, Education & Marketing E-Conference:
Beginning annually in 2005, SWANA's Communication, Education and Marketing Division will host SWANA's first ever, completely on-line, web-based conference.  From the comfort of their own home or office, attendees can cost-effectively (keeping those tight budgets in mind!) participate and network with colleagues through a variety of unique presentations and discussion forums on topics such as:

  • Using new technologies in communication/education
  • Working with public officials
  • Media relations
  • Coordinating special events
  • School education programs
  • Creating and executing community awareness campaigns
  • Outreach to multi-cultural audiences
  • Crisis communication & disaster response programs and strategies

One of SWANA’s core goals is to provide its technical division members with the opportunity to share ideas with other industry professionals across North America and to identify topics that guide your work today and that will influence your work in the future. There are a number of ways in which a CEM technical division member can get more involved – there’s something for everyone!

  • Participate in our program committee for WASTECON and/or the annual CEM E-Conference and help plan the content for these events
  • Communicate with other division members through the CEM list serves to get answers to your questions and feedback on your ideas
  • Share ideas and network with others in the field through SWANA CEM events and division member contacts
  • Submit an abstract for either of these events to share your ideas and work with people across North America
  • Not keen on public speaking?  Contact Catherine McCall to work on featuring either an article you wrote, an idea you have, or your program and work in one of our quarterly newsletters

WASTECON:
The CEM Division is also responsible for developing networking activities, training courses & workshops, and educational sessions for WASTECON, SWANA’s annual solid waste show.

CEM Training and Workshops:
The Division’s Training Committee works to identify and develop workshops and training courses that focus on communication, education and marketing concepts impacting the solid waste community. The Committee is currently looking into the possibility of various on-line training options and expanding the successful Public Education Workshop for Solid Waste Professionals held at WASTECON 2004 and planned for WASTECON 2005.

Quarterly Newsletter:
The Division’s quarterly E-newsletter provides CEM subscribers with up-to-date industry-related news and unique case studies that may be of interest. It also provides a glimpse into how the CEM Division will be involved in upcoming SWANA events.

Awards:
The CEM Division currently evaluates and presents three SWANA Excellence Awards at WASTECON every year in the following categories - Communication, Public Education, and Marketing. In the past two years, over 30 organizations have submitted applications for these popular awards and the Division expects that trend to continue.
